Volunteers Needed to Assist with a Cypress Marsh Restoration Project Near Chalmette

Volunteers Needed!!

Register Now

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation are looking for interested volunteers to participate in a cypress swamp restoration project near the Caernarvon Diversion in Plaquemines Parish, LA.  This project will promote a healthy cypress forest on land that has been accumulating from sediment outflow from the Caernarvon Diversion.  The restored cypress forest will provide critical habit for wildlife and provide storm protection to the adjacent marsh and communities.

Project Details:

When:    Friday March 9, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to no later than 4:00 p.m.

Where:   Caernarvon Diversion Outfall Canal

Detailed direction will be sent out closer to the event.

All volunteers must register with CRCL to attend the event!

All planting equipment (gloves, shovels, etc.), lunch, and refreshments will be provided.

Volunteers will be planting 250 three-gallon pots of cypress trees and wrapping the trees with protectors to shield them from predators.

Volunteers will be transported to the planting site by boat.  This will be a muddy day.  This is a strenuous and dirty activity, so physical fitness is required.

Additional information, including directions and what to bring, will be provided a few days prior to the event.

If you would like to volunteer your boat for this event, please let us know!  It would be used to help transport volunteers and trees to the site.  A flat bottom boat that can navigate shallow water is preferred.  If you are interested, please email Hilary Collis at hilaryc@crcl.org for more information.

We understand that plans can change.  If, after registering, you find you are unable to attend the event, please email CBRPintern@crcl.org and let us know you have to cancel so we can make your spot available to other potential volunteers.

Additional support for this project comes from the Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration and Shell.

Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture Lecture: Gary Smith

Please join the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture for the initial lecture by our Nadine Carter Russell Chair, Gary Smith, a landscape architect and artist who resides in Toronto, Canada, at 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 13th, in room 103 (auditorium) of the College of Art + Design Building at LSU.

Gary recently released a new publication, From Art to Landscape (Unleashing Creativity in Planting Design) by Timber Press. We were able to view two of his presentations at ASLA’s Annual Meeting & Expo in San Diego, and he is an extremely enthusiastic and dynamic speaker who uses plant materials as his palette for “painting” the landscape with color. Gary will join us again for lectures on March 14th for his Manship Lecture Series talk (followed by a two-week stay with us to conduct workshops and prepare an exhibit at Hilltop Arboretum), and April 4th for his final talk.

Click here for more information, and by all means join us for his lecture.
