Beyond Accessibility: A Higher Level of Inclusive Play

Attendees will learn more about the range of disabilities of playground participants and especially the rapidly growing incidence of children with autism and related spectrum disorders, and how to design playgrounds to meet their unique needs. Tips and strategies will be provided on how to make small to major changes in their play spaces to make playgrounds not just welcoming, but engaging, challenging and therapeutic.

The instructor, Steven Hare, is the Southeastern Regional Sales Manager for Landscape Structures and has 22 years of experience in the playground and landscape industry. He is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector and International Playground Contractors Association certified playground installer.

Produced in partnership with Neighborland and GOOD, the program is recruiting creatives from across New Orleans to participate. As a collaborator, you’ll work together to create a project that addresses an important issue in our city. The project can by anything that brings the ideas a step closer to reality–a print design, public art, a physical installation or pop-up event, or a simple web tool. Neighborland will provide $500 to bring each project to life.

GOOD Ideas for New Orleans will focus the creative energy of New Orleanians on four challenges:

1. Making bike transportation easier and safer.

2. Bringing more food trucks to New Orleans.

3. Beautifying intersections to improve safety and foster neighborhood pride.

4. Educating people about growing, buying, and cooking healthy local foods.

This internship is for any college student (must be a full time student in the fall 2012) that may be interested in a summer internship with Baton Rouge Green (funding is still pending but we are encouraged!).

BR Green would prefer to have a student in ag, forestry, urban forestry, landscape architecture, horticulture….if possible, but the job will also include a lot of office work/event planning.
