LA Month – School Presentations

During Landscape Architecture month, a couple presentations about the profession were given by local landscape architects at schools in Baton Rouge.

Brian Goad of Reich Associates spoke at 3 architecture classes at Catholic High School. The school put a small write-up about it on their website here.

Jenny Harbourt, also of Reich Associates, visited Most Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and gave a presentation to five year-olds on what landscape architecture is. She also passed around plants for them to touch, and did a drawing activity with them. See a few pictures from the day below:

LA Month – Park du Lafayette

As part of Landscape Architecture Month, landscape architects in Lafayette, led by Haley Blakeman, are designing and implementing renovations for a small park there called Park du Lafayette. A community work day to paint the walls, benches, fountain, and stage is planned for May 14th. A poster showing the rendered site plan was displayed at the park during Festival Internationale.

LA Month – A Man Named Pearl

The Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge presents Scott Galloway’s A Man Named Pearl, part of the 2008-2009 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. This documentary is the inspiring tale of self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar, showing what one person can achieve when he allows himself to share the full expression of his humanity.

Old South Baton Rouge Community Work Day

In celebration of ASLA National Landscape Architecture Month, we invite you to join us in planting a new front yard landscape for two homes in Old South Baton Rouge, as part of the Center for Planning Excellence’s Home Rehab Program. The event will be part of a community revitalization effort that will include the community and students in the landscaping and painting of the homes. Anyone interested in joining to help with landscaping the front yard or painting is welcome to come out!

Lunch to be provided by Campus Federal
Some water/gatorade to be provided, but you may want to bring your own

Come out for a day of service in Baton Rouge’s Mid City neighborhood. Using the “block concept” volunteers will help change the faces of homes concentrated in the same area to achieve a grander impact on the community. Volunteers will be repairing, painting and landscaping homes of low-income, elderly and disabled residents. “The block concept creates a community event with all volunteers, homeowners, and homeowner families participating and interacting with each other.”
